    With volunteer participation, we give a multimedia, hands-on cultural experience on India built around social studies, visual arts and dance. Particular emphasis is put on turban demo, dot demo, Bhangra Dance, Bollywood Gandhi, and Rangoli art.
  • Dancing the Painting
    Residency;  Workshop
    Dancing the Painting is a 3-5 day creative dance and art making residency that explores and responds to a work of visual art through dance making. This residency is directed by dance educator and choreographer, Sarah Council, with a special guest visual artist. Students will discover that both visual art and dance are powerful modes of expression that utilize line, texture, imagery, point of view and perspective. Over the course of this residency students will: – Study a masterpiece of visual art; observing color, line, imagery, texture, and perspective. After which, they will explore these ideas through movement utilizing the elements of dance (shape, time, space and quality). – Work independently and in small groups to create original choreography inspired by these explorations. – Perform and observe these small group dances within the classroom setting. – Work with a special guest visual artist to craft original works of art inspired by what was seen and experienced. – Rehearse and present an informal sharing for another classroom or invited guests. This sharing will include performances of student choreography alongside showings of student art work. This program will meet for a total of 3-5 days. The exact residency duration and schedule can be determined to meet the needs of each individual school. The program will also include a collaborative planning meeting between the teaching artist and classroom teachers before the residency begins to identify objectives. The residency will culminate in an informal classroom sharing. Dancing the Painting aligns with the following Arts and Science Council’s funding priority area: Developing Third Grade Reading Skills (vocabulary development and comprehension).

    This program will travel your students back in time to learn how the very first photographs were made – with light, science and magic! Students will enjoy capturing images using the tactile medium of darkroom photography. Lessons can be open-ended or connect to particular themes. Traditional processes like pinhole photography, darkroom photography and cyanotypes can be explored. Darkrooms are not always required but can be constructed at your facility. Black Bird Studio will offer a few program concepts from which you can choose based on the age group you would like to impact.   
  • Didgeridoo Down Under Show: Australian Music - Cul...

    G’day mate! Didgeridoo Down Under = Australian Music, Education, Entertainment. The DDU Show is a unique fusion of Australian music, culture, art, science, comedy, character building, anti-bullying and audience participation. The didgeridoo has been played by Aboriginal Australians for at least 1,500 years, and is known for its otherworldly sound. But DDU is much more than music. It’s interactive, educational, motivational and super fun … for all ages! During the show, we play a variety of exotic didgeridoos. We also use a multitude of props – including a vocabulary list, a globe, motivational signs, artifacts, artwork and puppets – to deliver educational lessons and empowering messages. We adjust our programs according to age levels and learning objectives. DDU will motivate your students to … – Appreciate world music and art. – Act with kindness and acceptance. – Respect multiculturalism and diversity. – Think creatively and imaginatively. – Stand up against bullying. – Protect the environment. – Become better global citizens!   • Didgeridoo Make & Play Residency

    This amazing cultural arts experience includes two to five full days of didgeridoo immersion. The residency kicks off with the DDU show and includes the same learning experience as the Aussie Funk Jam, plus more advanced didgeridoo rhythms and playing techniques. The residency culminates with a mini-performance, in which the students are the musical stars! Upon request, each participant also can make, paint and decorate a cardboard didgeridoo. (Cardboard tubes must be purchased separately by the school. We know an inexpensive supplier.)  The residency is best for ages 8 and up.
  • Diggery Digger's Dino Adventure Now In 3D

    While Paleontologist Diggery Diggers is showing his fossils to a live audience, he discovers a “top secret” box the museum accidentally packed. Curious, Diggery opens the box and unleashes the DinoSauroScope 3000 or DINA taking the audience back into time to interact with dinosaurs. All is well until they use DINA on a large dinosaur egg. The egg hatches and an amazing thing happens. The dinosaurs in museums around the world start to come alive! The only way to stop this dinosaur regeneration is to return the baby dinosaur back to it’s mother. Come along for a rocking dino adventure with Diggery and save the human race. The show has incredible props including large interactive animated characters, dinosaur bones, a giant dinosaur egg and beautiful puppets. Combined with intriguing magic and rocking music, this is the Story Ship’s most memorable adventure.     Learn how to build your very own graphic tee! Students will design their own t-shirts to take home at the end of the program. They will learn about the a variety of processes used by printmakers and how to design a fashionable piece of art. This project can be focused on individual student designs or the development of one collaborative design that will be used by group such as a school club or team. Themes such as "Speak Your Mind" or "Create a Personal Logo" are great topics for students to explore.

    Dr. Seuss -- Out Of the Pages and Into Clay

    Dr. Seuss is not only an author but an artist as well. His colorful and silly creatures, trees, animals, buildings and animals combined with his silly and rhyming words are the perfect foundation for creating colorful and silly things out of clay. Students will listen to a Dr. Seuss book read by our teaching artist to start the class off, then use a variety of techniques to create and colorfully paint a project that relates to the book. Clayworks and the teacher will choose a book and discuss projects before the session. One time workshops: Students will be able to create and decorate with colored slips one clay creation. Clayworks will fire the pieces from the class and return them to the school after firing. Residency:  3 Days of creating with one class where students will have opportunity to dive more in depth to the creative process and create 2-3 projects based on time.   • Draw Mindfully with Rangoli Art
    Draw Mindfully with Rangoli Art

    Offered in 3 different Residency (5 day, 3 day, 2 day) formats (5 workstations in a 45-60 min classroom session= ‘1 contact hour’), & Teacher Training Rangoli is an art form from India in which patterns are created on the floor in living rooms or courtyards using materials such as colored rice, dry flour, colored sand or flower petals. It is traditionally done by women. The purpose is decoration. Students color their play sand with food colors and learn the use of hand, cone and strainer to pour the materials into their art form on the table. A 2 minute art-walk to other tables helps them review others art-in-progress. As they return and complete their project, photos are taken before clearing the table. Students at any grade level are encouraged to start with their own favorite drawing of for example a human face, an animal, a house, or landscape and learn to produce it through the Rangoli concept. In the Indian community, this practice is showcased during occasions such as festivals, auspicious observances, marriage celebrations etc. Rangoli designs can be simple geometric shapes, deity impressions, or flower and petal shapes or elaborate designs crafted by numerous people.

    In this residency, students learn about different kinds of dyes that can be used in artwork. Students use ready made dyes, they also make their own dye out of natural resources. Natural dyes provide a scientific and historical curriculum.  This residency also has an African American cultural option.
  • Eco Printing
    Residency
    This introductory 3-day residency covers the basics of natural pigments found in plant material, and the most basic method of transferring these pigments to print on paper or fabric. We will also talk about mordants and why they let fabric grab hold of color, and how colors can be modified by incorporating acid, base, aluminum, and iron.  Students will see color changes in base solutions and learn basic vocabulary surrounding their observation.  Students will be given the opportunity to walk outside around campus to find leaves and other items to use for their art project. Using both foraged and provided materials students will have to opportunity to create 2 different types of Eco Prints, pounded plants and flowers, on paper, and Eco Printing on Cotton. Each student will leave with a paper print and an Eco Printed cotton bandanna, or optionally, a t-shirt.

    (Guided Tour + Goal Setting Exercise + Artist Led Drawing Workshop) 3rd – 12th Grade Students will be led on a guided tour of one exhibition and then experience a 45-minute workshop centered around creating a personal vision. Led by a museum educator or teaching artist students will complete a goal setting exercise and use the information gained to create a self-portrait.

    Ephemeral art is temporary. The art itself is about the creative process, the final product and the transformation of the art as it deteriorates and fades. Students will fall in love with the process of constructing beautiful, nature-inspired installations or mandalas on the campus lawns and gardens. The process will involve working collaboratively or individually to improvise with natural materials. All final works will be photographed as keepsakes for each team of artists.  This lesson can be modified to connect to math, science or social studies. 
  • Express Yourself Club
    Out-of-School-Time
    Students in rising grades 6 – 8 are invited to attend Express Yourself Club with a music therapist from Piedmont Music Therapy. Students will focus on creative outlet in dealing with anxiety and emotional issues.  They’ll explore music and art, drama, songwriting, lyric analysis and musical improvisation through out the club program.  This program is geared towards teenagers to help smooth the transition from elementary school to middle school. The program aims to help students in rising middle school grades to build self-esteem and self-confidence. They will explore concepts related to healthy coping skills, peer pressure and supportive resources. The club will weave creative and expressive arts through out the theme of resiliency and growing up as these middle school aged students explore their own journey and connect with fellow students.
  • Fanciful and Functional Artist Books: Create, Writ...
    Workshop
    During the first session, I introduce the artist book concept by showing and explaining various types of artist books, explaining how the content of the writing can be incorporated into the book construction. Following, I teach students how to decorate paste papers, which they will use for book covers and collage inside their books. During following sessions, students learn how to fold an artist book, such as an origami book, a secret room book, or a spiral book, and add paste paper covers. Afterwards, we brainstorm a topic, which has either been requested or approved by the teacher, such as being thankful, my special place, Christmas, my timeline, or even abstinence, and then students pre-write personal prose/poetry based on the topic. When applicable, I include art images, for example memory paintings by Minnie Reinhardt for the special place topic, as well as related music and poetry into the discussion process. After completion of the first draft, I introduce various writing activities, incorporating elements of writing, to encourage students to practice better writing skills. These activities include poetry writing, e.g. the cinquain, diamante, or amulet, as well as finding descriptive synonyms for hackneyed words. Toward the end of the residency, students complete their books by transposing their revised prose or poetry onto the book pages and illustrating it with drawings, collages, or photographs. On the last day, students share their work with classmates. In addition to the book arts program, I also teach papermaking by recycling scrap paper and adding inclusions, such as flower petals and yarn fibers.  Each student will create at least one piece of recycled art paper during those visits.  
  • First Nations Totem

    Ceramics has a long and rich history not just in the state of North Carolina but worldwide. This workshop introduces students to the cultural practices of the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest. Totem poles were and are used for a variety of purposes. As house poles, they symbolize the wealth of the family while other poles recount significant myths or local events. After a brief discussion of the totem poles and their function, students will sketch and design their poles as a group. Each group will then sculpt their own ceramic totem poles using the coil and pinch methods of handbuilding. Discussions and projects will be age/grade appropriate. Most schools use this project as an opportunity for their students to make an totem piece that is part of a greater totem pole and displayed as an art installation on their school campus. Workshops:  Will create a totem piece per student.  If the full 90 minutes is available, students will have the opportunity to add a little color to their pieces. Residencies:  Students will have the opportunity to dive more in depth into the history of totems as well as spend the 3rd day decorating with colored underglazes. Projects will travel back to Clayworks to dry and be fired before being returned to Clayworks. We will provide rebar for installing the totems. Installation of the piece is not included.

    GLOBAL STUDIES The World in Our Backyard is extremely proud of our 45 minute programs developed for students to engage them in a creative and energetic way through the use of photographs, artifacts, cultural costumes and traditional music. Attached are photos from past presentations. Our in-house field trips support the North Carolina Common Core State Standards and World Languages Essential Standards by exposing students to diverse global cultures. Geographical features, natural resources, traditional beliefs and values, and important historical events impact the social development of all people. The following programs are offered: – Africa, Australia, China, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Italy, Mexico, Native Americans, the Netherlands, and Peru. NORTH CAROLINA HISTORY (4th grade only) Students will learn about the geographic regions, landforms and natural resources of North Carolina. They will explore how the changing needs of its people impacted social, economic and political institutions. The experiences and contributions of many diverse North Carolinians will be shared. Each student will participate as a part of history, by being dressed up and introduced as an historical figure, beginning with the Native Americans and continuing to the present.     Experience an introduction to Charlotte’s Black History with an in depth 45 to 60-minute guided tour of our facility and our current exhibitions. Students and educators can experience a deeper connection with the exhibits by completing a thematic exercise or a scavenger hunt during their tour. Our guided tour experience is customized to your group’s grade level by our trained docents and museum educators. Scavenger Hunt + Thematic Activity Available- Add an additional layer to your standard guided tour by completing a scavenger hunt based on the exhibitions. Groups may also check out one of our thematic activity pouches which help students to explore the deeper themes within each work of art.
  • Heidelberg Houses

    Students are introduced to The Heidelberg Project in Detroit MI by artist Tyree Guyton, and create their own mini houses reflecting who they are and where they come from.  In three steps, students learn about the artist and his project, use paper mache paste and various images to cover their carton with images reflecting themselves, and utilize various materials to embellish and add final details. These homes can be a springboard for a writing lesson as well.

    What does your future home look like? Is it filled with laughter, music, the chatter of keys on a keyboard or the voices of children? Who is inside your home and what are they doing? Who are YOU in this home? These are just a few questions students will respond to using digital collage and photography techniques. Students will get inspired by the work of contemporary artists before they create their own beautifully layered masterpieces! Group demonstrations and one-on-one guidance will teach students the basics of digital layering.     Students will enjoy building their own "affirmation boards" in this laid back, mixed media or digital art program. Students will be asked to consider their greatest strengths and focus on what makes them unique as they build layered portraits or abstracted works that integrate positive affirmations that will remind them of their best qualities. Affirmations can also take the form of goals, wishes and dreams.   • Immersed in Light: Studio Drift at the Mint

    This sixty minute tour will allow students to experience the immersive work of Studio Drift, founded by Dutch artists Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn. Their breathtaking sculptures explore the relationship between humanity, nature, and technology. Students will engage in collaborative discussions led by volunteer docents exploring the themes and creation of these pieces.
