Program description

EDUCATION STANDARDS

NC Standard Course of Study:

SL2 Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. Our programs focus on a multi-sensory and multi-step approach to learning. All programs have a slide presentation, hands-on artifacts, interactive educational displays and live animal demonstrations. There are live hands-on animals in every program. SL5 Make strategic use of digital media and visual displays of data to express information and enhance understanding of presentations. Programs include colorful images to explain science concepts via slides, posters, charts and diagrams. Also on display are a large variety of hands-on common and uncommon artifacts (some rare and endangered) for students to compare texture, color, shape and form. SL6 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and communicative tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. During the presentation, students are provided with new vocabulary pertaining to the science topic. SL3 Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric. Periodically throughout the presentation, students are encouraged to ask questions.

NC Essential Standards:

1.L.1 Understand characteristics of various environments and behaviors of humans that enable plants and animals to survive. 1.L.1.2 Give examples of how the needs of different plants and animals can be met by their environments in North Carolina or different places throughout the world. Comparison is made of the types of plants and animals found in North Carolina environments and how they differ from one region to another. 3.L.2 Understand how plants survive in their environments. 3.L.2.2. Explain how environmental conditions determine how well plants survive and grow. Plants found in saltwater marshes are tough to withstand muck, marl and salt. Hands-on dried marsh plant specimen are provided for students to see and touch. Carnivorous plants such as Venus fly-traps and pitcher plants live in poor nutrient soils and obtain their nourishment from the insects they trap. A hands-on cross-section of a pitcher plant is provided for students to examine insect exoskeleton remains with a hand-held magnifying glass. 5.L.2 Understand the interdependence of plants and animals with their ecosystem. 5.L.2.1 Compare the characteristics of several common ecosystems, including estuaries and salt marshes, oceans, lakes and ponds, forests and grasslands. This program discusses a variety of habitats found throughout the state of North Carolina with examples of the plants and animals that live there. Main habitats discussed are offshore reefs, saltwater marshes, freshwater ecosystems, sandhill community, forests and mountain regions. Hands-on artifacts representing various animals and/or plants living in those North Carolina environments are displayed. Live animal demonstrations include native snakes, a freshwater turtle and North Carolina’s state reptile, an Eastern box turtle.

Cancellation Policy

Notification is needed as soon as possible and we will reschedule the program as calendar permits. A cancellation fee is due if cancelled within a 2 week period from the program date. The cancellation fee is $75.
