Students will learn about American Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, and explore the Bechtler’s collection of 20th-century modern art. The residency will begin with a presentation on the life and work of Lichtenstein, his approach to mimicking prints through painting, his use of repetition, line, and color, and why he focused on popular contemporary imagery, especially that found in comic books. Fees / Ticketing:

This 3-day Residency is $500 for one class, and $350 for each additional class. The cost includes all teaching materials and travel.


NC Standard Course of Study:

W1 – Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. Students will complete a pre- and post- written assessment using Visual Thinking Strategies. In the VTS approach to learning, students are asked to answer three open-ended questions. The questions, “What’s going on in this picture?”, “What do you see that makes you say that?”, and, “What more can we find?” lead them to look carefully at works of art, talk about what they observe, back up their ideas with evidence, and discuss multiple possible interpretations of the work. W5 – Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. Students will complete a pre- and post- written assessment using Visual Thinking Strategies. The students will complete this written assessment initially, before being introduced to the content of the residency, and then once more after learning the content and completing the program. SL1 – Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Students will increase their speaking and listening skills by participating in class discussions about Roy Lichtenstein.

NC Essential Standards:

K-8.V.1 – Use the language of visual arts to communicate effectively. Through classroom discussions about the artwork of Roy Lichtenstein and Pop Art, students will increase their art vocabulary and communication skills. K-8.V.2 – Apply creative and critical thinking skills to artistic expression. Students will design and create watercolor resists inspired by Lichtenstein’s artwork. K-8.V.3 – Create art using a variety of tools, media, and processes, safely and appropriately. Students will work with several types of media during this three day processes. Specifically, they will first create sketches using pencils and paper. They will then create contour line paintings using acrylic paint and gloss medium. Finally, students will finish their piece using watercolor paint.

Cancellation Policy

Written cancellation for program must be sent to and received no later than 10 days prior to the start date of the program. If the program is cancelled after the 10 day deadline, then a $500 cancellation fee will be required. No phone calls, please.
