Program description

Coaching provides aspiring musicians in grades 6 through 12* with invaluable feedback directly from professional Charlotte Symphony performing artists. Our musicians visit band and orchestra classes to work directly with students through individual or sectional coaching. Goals are set to improve student playing technique, create a conversation about expressive music and performance practice.

Once your initial request is received, we will send an electronic coaching application form. This is where you can list instrument choices and date/time preferences.

**Dates are contingent on musician availability and must fit around their fluctuating rehearsal schedule

We suggest looking at a range of dates when you would like the session(s) to take place. We do our best to find times within or as close to your request as possible. Musician schedules do fill up quickly so it is imperative to return the coaching application as soon as possible.

Available times:

You will send the meeting times for each class you request coaching for, along with the instrument choice(s) for each class. Please include the start and end times of the class as well as if it meets on A/B days.

Length of program: 1 - 1.5 hours per session
Space / technical requirements:

Once coaching date and times are confirmed, you will receive a form to complete to help your CSO coach come prepared. This will include musical goals for the session, repertoire, and any other information you find necessary. Completion and submission of this form is mandatory at least one week prior to the scheduled session.

Coaching: $90 per hour, per musician

**Schools outside of Mecklenburg County are subject to additional travel costs

EDUCATION STANDARDS

NC Standard Course of Study:

Language R1, R4, R10 Coaching sessions increases students music literacy by helping them comprehend, analyze, and interpret musical texts (scores, sheet music, etc.). Math Standard 6 Attend to precision. Math Standard 7 Look for and make use of structure. When learning how to read music, students must be able to apply mathematical skills in addition, multiplication, ratios, and fractions; and be able to identify mathematical structures and forms.

NC Essential Standards:

ML.1 Apply the elements of music and musical techniques in order to sing and play music with accuracy and expression. CSO Coaches work with students in areas including correct tone production, posture, fingering, and musicianship skills. ML.2 Interpret the sound and symbol systems of music. CSO Coaches work with students on rhythmic and note accuracy, meter, and dynamics. MR.1 Understand the interacting elements to respond to music and music performances. CSO Coaches work with players on how to respond to a conductor’s gestures, as well as how to identify and play music of different genres, styles, and historical periods.

Cancellation Policy

Advanced notice is necessary. A 48-hour notice is required to cancel or reschedule any Coaching session. Any session canceled within the 48-hour window is subject to be charged the full amount.
