Program Detail
Throughout the year, weather permitting.
10:00am – 12:00pm, other times available by request.
Historic Rural Hill is a 265 acre working farm and non-profit historic site surrounded by open landscape and rolling hills. Due to the integral role of the landscape to our programming, all educational programs are conducted on site. The seating capacity of our Rural Retreat cabin maxes out at around 40. Groups larger than 40 will be divided into groups for certain portions of the program, groups of 80 students or more may be asked to come on multiple days. All programs are primarily held out-of-doors and wheelchair access to certain historic structures may be limited.
Historic Rural Hill is located approximately 20 minutes north from uptown Charlotte at 4431 Neck Road in Huntersville, NC.
New for 2016, we are proud to announce that we will be implementing a sliding scale fee structure that is never more than $5 per student. CMS Schools may qualify for a 40% or even 60% reduction in per-student cost! Contact us for details.
EDUCATION STANDARDS
When students participate in an educational program at Historic Rural Hill, material is presented in a clear, concise, and engaging manner. Through direct questioning and open conversation, efforts are made to involve the students in the conversation rather than just having them listen. By doing this the programs effectively connect to SL.1 and SL.2 in grades K-8th, and SL.3 in grades K-3rd.
Historic Rural Hill was founded in 1765 by an eventual signer of the famed Mecklenburg County Declaration of Independence. This makes our site an excellent connector to Essential Standards, primarily but not limited to H.1 in grades K-6th and 8th and H.2 in grades 3-6th and 8th. Rural Hill’s educational programming covers the geography of the immediate area and beyond through the use of mapping activities and open discussion regarding the landscape and how it changed overtime, connecting to Essential Standard G.1 in grades 2-5th and 8th.
