Movement Migration is a collective of seasoned dance artists collaborating to create and perform dynamic and poignant dance works that portray the depths of the human experience; the dances are shared with audiences locally and globally in performance and educational venues. “Migration” signals the transformation and convergence of technical training and individual approaches into a collective creativity that traverses cultural and generational boundaries and transfers movement knowledge from person to person and community to community.

Movement Migration is committed to making dance education, training, and performance accessible and inclusive at a level of artistic excellence that perpetuates and extends the legacies of American modern dance. Perhaps just as importantly, our genuinely diverse, intergenerational company is eager to bring our rich artistic experiences and life perspectives to the many cultural conversations that are important to the future of Charlotte.

Kim Jones is the Artistic Director of Movement Migration, a modern dance company based in Charlotte, NC. She is an Associate Professor of Dance at UNC Charlotte and a régisseur for the Martha Graham Resource Center. She danced with the Martha Graham Dance Company and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and served as a principal dancer in the US National Tour of The King and I. Kim is well known for her work with historic modern dances. Most recently, the late Paul Taylor, a leading American modern dance choreographer, offered Tracer (1962) as the subject of a scholarly reconstruction to Kim. She recreated the work using her research and dance expertise on Taylor 2 Dance Company members, thanks to funding from the NEA Art Works grant, UNC Charlotte Faculty Research Grant and Wells Fargo. In 2013, Kim reconstructed Martha Graham’s Imperial Gesture (1935), which is in the repertory of the Martha Graham Dance Company. Both reconstructed works were featured in the Sunday edition of The New York Times. Kim has also restaged Graham’s Primitive Mysteries (1931), Panorama (1935) and Steps in the Street (1936), with funding from the NEA American Masterpieces grant. In 2018/2019 served as Resident Director at Kingston University.

Program Description

This mind/body workshop uses improvisational techniques to facilitate students’ creative process. Movement Migration professional dance artists lead students in an exploration of movement qualities, interconnectedness, and intrapersonal communication. Students then create a movement sequence that embodies a central theme and communicates feelings, thoughts, or images.
