The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture exists to present, preserve and promote African-American art, culture and history for the education and enlightenment of all. It is our intention to stimulate interest in the creative contributions African-Americans have made to world culture and inspire life-long learning. Since its founding in 1974, the dream of the first visionaries has been elevated to unanticipated levels. Located in the heart of Uptown Charlotte at the Levine Center for the Arts, the Afro-American Cultural Center, is now known as the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture. This new facility is named in honor of Harvey Bernard Gantt, a trailblazer known for being the first African-American student admitted to Clemson University who later served as Charlotte’s first African-American mayor.
