W1 – Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. Students will complete a pre- and post- written assessment using Visual Thinking Strategies. In the VTS approach to learning, students are asked to answer three open-ended questions. The questions, “What’s going on in this picture?”, “What do you see that makes you say that?”, and, “What more can we find?” lead them to look carefully at works of art, talk about what they observe, back up their ideas with evidence, and discuss multiple possible interpretations of the work. W5 – Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. Students will complete a pre- and post- written assessment using Visual Thinking Strategies. The students will complete this written assessment initially, before being introduced to the content of the residency, and then once more after learning the content and completing the program. SL1 – Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Students will increase their speaking and listening skills by participating in class discussions about the selected artist.

K-12.V.1 – Use the language of visual arts to communicate effectively. Students will learn and exercise vocabulary words related to the visual arts. K-12.V.2 – Apply creative and critical thinking skills to artistic expression. Students will create individual and collaborative artwork in this program, thus increasing their critically thinking and problem solving skills. K-12.V.3 – Create art using a variety of tools, media, and processes, safely and appropriately. Students will create a collaborative permanent panel installation using a variety of tools, media, and processes, safely and appropriately.
