Bechtler In-School Artist Residencies bring artists directly into classrooms. These residencies place trained, knowledgeable, practicing teaching artists into schools to share the benefits of the creative process. Needs addressed by each artist residency are: 1) engaging students as active participants in learning; 2) enhancing arts and classroom curricula and developing arts literacy; 3) increasing the scope and quality of arts education; and 4) connecting schools with community art resources and organizations through partnerships.
The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art provides a look at rarely seen works of 20th-century modern art, most of which has previously been held in the private Bechtler family collection. The collection offers a unique opportunity to engage school students in active learning using artworks of international renown and merit as educational tools.

Students will learn about American Pop artist Andy Warhol, and explore printmaking through the Bechtler’s collection of 20th-century modern art. The residency will begin with a presentation on the life and work of Warhol, his approach to printmaking, use of repetition and color, and why he focused on popular contemporary imagery and advertising materials. Then, students will learn the silk-screen printmaking process and create prints inspired by the artist. Before and after the program, students will work on writing exercises based on visual thinking strategies, which is not only important for enhancing 3rd grade reading skills, but also for all age levels.

W1 – Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. Students will complete a pre- and post- written assessment using Visual Thinking Strategies. In the VTS approach to learning, students are asked to answer three open-ended questions. The questions, “What’s going on in this picture?”, “What do you see that makes you say that?”, and, “What more can we find?” lead them to look carefully at works of art, talk about what they observe, back up their ideas with evidence, and discuss multiple possible interpretations of the work. W5 – Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. Students will complete a pre- and post- written assessment using Visual Thinking Strategies. The students will complete this written assessment initially, before being introduced to the content of the residency, and then once more after learning the content and completing the program. SL1 – Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Students will increase their speaking and listening skills by participating in class discussions about Andy Warhol.
K-8.V.1 – Use the language of visual arts to communicate effectively. Through classroom discussions about the artwork of Andy Warhol and the two different printmaking techniques, students will increase their art vocabulary and communication skills. K-8.V.2 – Apply creative and critical thinking skills to artistic expression. Students will design and create prints inspired by Warhol’s artwork. K-8.V.3 – Create art using a variety of tools, media, and processes, safely and appropriately. Students will work with several types of media during this two day processes. Specifically, they will create sketches using pencils and paper. They will produce prints utilizing silk screens.
