Sandy Creek Weavers-Victoria Sowers

The art of weaving runs deep in the roots of Sandy Creek Weavers. Since 1998, Emily Hyatt and Victoria Sowers have been known professionally as Sandy Creek Weavers.  On historic utilitarian looms they create contemporary works of art.  Sandy Creek Weavers are renowned throughout the Southeastern U.S. for their school and community weaving residencies which capture “time in a tapestry”.  Their unique approach to “storytelling” through tapestry making has been noted by local news media everywhere they appear.Sandy Creek Weavers offers three types of Weaving Residencies:  (Please refer to the program description section of this Education Directory for details)

1-“Weaving Your History, A Fabric Time Capsule” (History lesson and weaving on a 200 year old loom.

2-“Lap Loom Fever” in combination with “Weaving Your History, A Fabric Timecapsule”.  This is for a Focus Group Residency.

3-“Navajo weaving and Navajo Life Experiences” Along with School and Community residencies their specialties are rugs, tapestries, wall hangings and memorial weavings.

Their work can be found from New York to Florida in homes, galleries, banks and even a congressional office.

Weaving Your History, A Fabric Time Capsule

Program description

The central focus of a fiber artist residency is hands on weaving by the participants on a 300 year old loom.  During the past fifteen years Sandy Creek Weavers have woven individually with over 300,000 students and adults.  Last year we conducted 30 residencies.

Residencies include the design and weaving of a large tapestry which incorporates items of sentimental value contributed by students, teachers and staff to be left on permanent display at each school.  The weaving becomes a Fabric Time Capsule representing that time in the school’s history.

Topics covered in a residency may include the process of weaving, loom construction, fibers, designs and the impact of hand loom weaving on textile production in colonial times and now with an emphasis on fabric and clothes, home furnishings, commercial uses, etc.  In each state in which we work this experience is correlated with the goals and objectives of the state educational standards in the areas of social studies and art as outlined in our Teachers Guide.

The over arching goal of the residencies is to keep alive an ancient art form and help students make connections with weaving through art, math, history, language, social studies and craftsmanship.
