Historic Rural Hill

Historic Rural Hill

Let Historic Rural Hill provide you with a great experience-based and cross-curricular field trip! Our programs have been offered to thousands of students since 2009! Believing that the best education is one that is built upon direct experience, students are allowed to smell, touch, hear, and sometimes (in regards to our heritage breed farm animals) even feed the history that they are learning about!

New for 2016, we are proud to announce that we will be implementing a sliding scale fee structure – CMS Schools may qualify for a 40% or even 60% reduction in per-student cost! Contact us for details.

Programs include:

Light and Heat in the Eighteenth Century (most popular)

1890’s Davidson School Day (perfect for small groups)

Cooking in the Backwoods (outdoor campfire cooking demo)

Remember to plan time for free play, a picnic lunch, the nature trail or a hay ride! With 265 acres of historic farm and forest land, there’s always something to do and see!

Programs for School Groups

Program description

Programs for school groups include:

Light and Heat in the Eighteenth Century (most popular; blends science and history)

Watch as fires are made and candles are poured, explore historic structures and meet our small herd of Highland Cattle. Your class learns about the fascinating lives of the people of the Charlotte Mecklenburg area during the colonial period of American History!

1890’s Davidson School Day (perfect for small groups)

Write on blackboards that were last used over one hundred years ago! Experience education as it was taught in Mecklenburg County back in 1890. This exciting program takes place in the one room Davidson Schoolhouse. Materials used and lessons taught all date back to the turn of the 20th century. An exciting trip for students and teachers alike.

Cooking in the Backwoods (outdoor campfire cooking demo)

Start out with a walking tour of the property and finish watching a meal be cooked over an open fire. An interesting look at how history and science go hand in hand.

Remember to plan time for free play, a picnic lunch, the nature trail or a hay ride! With 265 acres of historic farm and forest land, there’s always something to do and see!

EDUCATION STANDARDS

NC Standard Course of Study:

When students participate in an educational program at Historic Rural Hill, material is presented in a clear, concise, and engaging manner. Through direct questioning and open conversation, efforts are made to involve the students in the conversation rather than just having them listen. By doing this the programs effectively connect to SL.1 and SL.2 in grades K-8th, and SL.3 in grades K-3rd.

NC Essential Standards:

Historic Rural Hill was founded in 1765 by an eventual signer of the famed Mecklenburg County Declaration of Independence. This makes our site an excellent connector to Essential Standards, primarily but not limited to H.1 in grades K-6th and 8th and H.2 in grades 3-6th and 8th. Rural Hill’s educational programming covers the geography of the immediate area and beyond through the use of mapping activities and open discussion regarding the landscape and how it changed overtime, connecting to Essential Standard G.1 in grades 2-5th and 8th.
