Number Drummer creator, Troy Kryzalka, has worked in music and education for over 20 years. Along with being a musician and classroom teacher, Troy has worked in curriculum and instruction as a trainer, coach, and developer. Number Drummer was created because Troy struggled to learn and understand music the traditional way. Math became his approach for learning music, so it naturally created his method for teaching. Troy has delivered his Number Drummer program to thousands of students and educators across the U.S., and has been recognized and awarded by Yale University for his innovative teaching approach.
The Rhythmic Restaurant
This workshop demonstrates theatrical creativity through mathematics. Students practice, perform and present their mathematical rhythms through a creative “real-world” dramatization. Requires space with tables and chairs. Classroom or media center is ideal.
Math Focus: Repeated-Addition, Multiplication, Division, and Fractions.
Music Focus: Beat, Rhythm, Timbre, Dynamics, Tempo, and Form.

ON-CAMPUS WORKSHOPS | Precautions & Protocols (if applicable or relevant) Number Drummer Performances and Workshops are hands-on interactive experiences where audience members are active participants that work together to create and present a musical performance. During the experience, participants share objects, materials, and instruments. Participants are also seated and grouped together according to the sound or instrument they are assigned. Because it is a cooperative learning experience, schools and organizations are responsible for the following:
i. Determining the number of participants that safely occupy the space for safe and proper social distancing
ii. Managing the distance between participants
iii. If masks are required and managing their use
iv. Providing hand sanitizer for students to sanitize their hands before retrieving and after returning their objects, materials, or instruments

From kindergarten through 5th grade (and even above), phonological awareness is integrated through being able to demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes) (2). Phonics and word recognition requires students to be able to decode and read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words (3). The comparison between syllabication and rhythm is used as an illustrative tool to help students hear what certain fractions sound like and to expedite a student’s ability to learn and perform the music in a short period of time.

If either party cannot perform this contract due to fire or other casualty, inclement weather or hazardous conditions, illness or injury, or other cause beyond the control of the parties, then either party reserves the right to reschedule or cancel with no further obligation, but due to travel and scheduling, cancellation or rescheduling by the customer must occur no less than 48 hours prior to the event, otherwise a 20% service fee will be charged. If cancellation or rescheduling is due to COVID, then no service fee will be charged.
