Dancing Lifecycles

Program description

Dancing Lifecycles is a 3-5 day in-person OR virtual STEM focused creative dance residency for grades k-8 that explores the lifecycles of plant life, animal life or weather through movement and dance making. Working with dance educator and choreographer, Sarah Council, live in the classroom or virtually over Zoom, students will to focus on one of the categories listed above observing stages of growth, development and change; then respond by creating small group dances inspired by these cycles.

Over the course of this residency students will:

– Learn about the lifecycle of a butterfly, a seed, or the water cycle identifying and describing each stage of growth and development.

–  Explore these concepts through movement utilizing the elements of dance (shape, time, space and quality).

– Work independently and in small groups to create original choreography inspired by these explorations with a special focus on sequencing and exploring a variety of shapes and contrasting qualities.

– Perform and observe these small group dances in an informal sharing.

This program will meet for a total of 3-5 days. The exact residency duration, schedule and format can be determined to meet the needs of each individual school. The program will also include a collaborative planning meeting between the teaching artist and classroom teachers before the residency begins to identify objectives. The residency will culminate in an informal classroom sharing.

Dancing Lifecycles aligns with the following Arts and Science Council’s funding priority area: Developing Third Grade Reading Skills (vocabulary development and comprehension).
