A stroll through the grounds and restored buildings of the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village takes visitors back to rural life in the late 1800s. The village includes four restored buildings: the Mint Hill Country Doctor’s Museum, the Ira V. Ferguson Country Store, the Ashcraft School, and the Surface Hill Mine Gold Assay Office. In addition, the restored meat-curing building, chicken house, outhouse, and blacksmith shop reflect the rural nature of the area. It was a time when families paid the doctor’s fees with chickens, and stories were passed from generation to generation on the front porch swing. The Historic Village is a preservation project of the Mint Hill Historical Society.

A typical CMS field trip to the Village includes a guided tour through each of the four main buildings: country doctor’s office, country store, gold assayer’s office, and one room schoolhouse. The everyday aspects of family life in a small rural community are realized in buildings filled with artifacts from the era l880’s to l930. Our costumed interpreters activate the passion, fascination and inspiration of their audience, as evidenced by the many teacher/ student comments and letters received. As students move from building to building they learn about the necessary house and pumping water for their monthly bath, meat curing building, grain bins, herb garden, wood wright shop, blacksmith shop, gas station, corn crib, vintage tractor, hay rakes and other vintage farm equipment along the way.
