STEM: the Musical

STEM: the Musical

STEM: the Musical is a 50-minute content-driven theatrical production aimed at elementary through middle school students. Its science and math content is firmly grounded in Common Core and NC Essential Standards. This curriculum-based educational material is woven together with an inspirational message that encourages all students to engage with the sciences and explore!

STEM: the Musical is the first theatrical production to be awarded STEM.org’s prestigious Approved TrustMark, a distinction we share with Disney, Play-Doh, and Rubik’s Cube.

STEM: the Musical in Residence

Program description

The most immersive, interdisciplinary STEAM fusion ever conceived! The creators and cast of STEM: the Musical present an academically stimulating and inspirational two days of workshops and sessions, culminating with your students appearing in “STEM: the Musical Explains the Universe!” with the cast as we perform for your entire student body.

Expanding on material and concepts presented in the show, students in will learn engineering and acoustic principals as they are taken on a tour of professional sound equipment, and even learn the physics behind a perfectly constructed airplane.  Students will also have the opportunity to learn music from the show and then perform with the cast live. They will also get some one on one instruction in a supportive environment as brave soloists perform for their peers.

All students will get to take part in our inspiring #IAmtheNext campaign, and be a part of dress rehearsal and sound check leading up to the final performances.

We customize the experience to match your needs and the age levels participating, all tailored to NC learning standards. STEM: the Musical educates, entertains, and inspires!

EDUCATION STANDARDS

NC Standard Course of Study:

Common Core Anchor Standard R8: Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence. In our case, we explain the Scientific Method, and encourage students to use proper sources and evidence to overturn or validate hypotheses. Common Core Anchor Standard SL4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. In our song “Math is Everywhere,” the speaker/singer applies these principles to explain very simple through very complex mathematical concepts in an easy-to-digest manner. Common Core Math Standard 4.MD: Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit. We talk about the conversion of measurements in everyday situations like baking, telling time, and music (subdividing rhythm, etc.).

NC Essential Standards:

NC Essential Standard 3.P.1: Understand motion and factors that affect motion. NC Essential Standard 4.P.1: Explain how various forces affect the motion of an object. NC Essential Standard 5.P.1: Understand force, motion and the relationship between them. Our “Paper Airplane Samba” covers how thrust, drag, lift, and weight all affect an object’s ability to fly. NC Essential Standard 4.E.1: Explain the causes of day and night and phases of the moon. We explain that time – hours, minutes, seconds – are based on planetary motion, specifically, how long it takes the earth to rotate once. NC Essential Standard 4.E.2: Understand the use of fossils and changes in the surface of the earth as evidence of the history of Earth and its changing life forms. We explain which disciplines are used to learn about the earth’s ancient past – paleontology, archaeology, etc.
