Susan Hartley

Susan Hartley honors the foundation that the arts are central to teaching and learning. Collaboration, integration, engagement, challenge, and celebration are key components to a student’s successful learning experience. Susan, a 40-year veteran dance educator holds NC licensure, a BA in Dramatic Arts from UNC-CH and an MFA in dance from UNC-G. Presently a visiting artist with The United Arts Council of Wake County,Durham Arts Council Creative Arts in Public and Private Schools and ASC, she provides integrated curriculum using A+ principles and Anne Green Gilbert’s Brain Dance. She has been an NC Visiting Artist, K-12 NC and Southeast Dance Educator of the year, director, performer and choreographer with NC dance companies, dance educator with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and Wake County Public School System. She has taught dance at every level: infant, Pre-K through high school, university, adult and special programs. Her philosophy involves the process of discovery through movement as she collaborates with classroom teachers and students. Integrated movement activities involving English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies or the other arts are key components to her lessons. Susan also leads professional development workshops to provide tools for classroom teachers to incorporate the arts into their lesson plans.

Program description

Workshop(s) designed specifically for the classroom teacher will explore how to turn your curriculum into movement, to dance parts of speech, poetry, geometric design,algebra, force/motion, geography, authentic folk dance, etc. and comfortably create movement that depicts visual expressions of such.

(Participants create choreography representing balance/counterbalance, gravity, momentum, weather, rock cycles, life cycles of plants/butterflies, solids/liquids/gases, sound waves, rotation/revolution, solar system, skeletal/muscular/nervous system, simple machines, Newton’s Laws of Motion.)
SOCIAL STUDIES 6.C.1: Explain how the behavior and practices of individuals and groups influenced societies, civilizations and regions (Participants learn and perform authentic dances from countries around the world relate to social reasoning)
