Intro 2 Capoeira Class

Program description

American Capoeira Foundation’s Intro 2 Capoeira is a class designed to introduce the fundamental elements of capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian art form, to students. This unique art form combines music, dance, acrobatics, and martial arts.

The activities, movements, exercises that students will experience are designed to help students improve their flexibility, coordination, balance, rhythm, endurance, and strength. The class will also expose students to Brazilian Portuguese and culture. Students will be introduced to and learn one of the most fundamental movements of capoeira called ginga. Ginga is a swaying movement that looks like a dance however this movement allows for the capoeira player to be elusive and unpredictable. The second movement that students will explore during the class is a cartwheel which is called a aú. This acrobatic movement is one of the main transitional movements and defenses in capoeira. Ginga and  Aú are two of the main movements along with several other ground movements that participants will be introduced to in the class. Along with these movements, students will be exposed to a few of the main kicks and escapes (defenses) that make capoeira a unique martial art. Lastly students will be exposed to capoeira music and songs because music is an essential element of the art form. Music is what drives all of capoeira. Capoeira can not be played without music whether live or recorded. The goal of the class is give students a brief introduction into this unique art form that combines music, dance, acrobatics, and martial arts to create a unique fitness and cultural experience.

Capoeira was created during a time of oppression around the 16th Century when slavery was happening across the Americas. The art form has African origins however it was in Brazil that the art form was developed. Africans and Brazilian natives used capoeira as a way to preserve their culture and a form of protection from slave catchers.
