Reedy Creek Nature Center

Established in 1993, the Division of Nature Preserves and Natural Resources’ mission is to protect the region’s biodiversity and natural heritage for its inherent value and for the benefit of future generations by promoting open space preservation, conserving natural communities, and fostering awareness and stewardship through environmental education and outdoor recreation.

Reedy Creek Nature Preserve protects 737- acres of natural, forested habitat within Reedy Creek Park. There are over ten miles of hiking trails in the nature preserve for the outdoor enthusiast, giving visitors the opportunity to explore a variety of terrains, while enjoying scenic views of small lakes, forests, fields, streams, and wild life. Reedy Creek Nature Preserve is also home to Reedy Creek Nature Center and the Dr. James F. Matthews Center for Biodiversity Studies.

Reedy Creek Nature Center has developed Environmental Education Programs with Standard Course of Studies and Common Core in mind. All our programs help reinforce concepts that students learn in the classroom through hands-on live experiences by allowing students experience nature

Tremendous Trees

Program description

We all need trees.  They provide homes, food and other materials for people as well as wildlife.  In this outdoor exploration, students will learn about the parts of a tree such as roots, trunk, bark, branches, leaves, flowers and fruit.  We will compare the leaves and bark of various trees in our area and examine the similarities and differences between them.

The following prices are per class (max of 25 students): CMS at Reedy Creek Nature Center $30. Non CMS at Reedy Creek Nature Center $40.00.  Additional travel fee of $15 for programs at your site.

EDUCATION STANDARDS

NC Standard Course of Study:

R4 – Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. We will learn technical terms for botanical and zoological species, types and processes.

SL1 – Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Time is allowed for questions and discussions about specific topics in each program.

SL2 – Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively and orally. We will present and discuss information in various media formats, including hand-on exploration, outdoor oral presentation and digital media during our programs.

NC Essential Standards:

From the Science Standards:

K.L.1 – Look at the characteristics of trees and plants. Learn how they live in terms of their structure, growth, changes, and basic needs.

1.L.1 – Discover how trees need air, water, light and space in their environment. See the trees in the nature preserve by walking the trails.

2.L.2.1 – Identify ways in which many plants and animals closely resemble their parents in observed appearance and ways they are different.

2.L.2.2 – Recognize that there is variation among individuals that are related.

3.L.2 – Investigate the structure of trees and the functions of the roots, stems, leaves and flowers. Look at tree slices to see tree rings and how they function. Look at the environmental conditions that determine how well plants survive and grow by learning about the rain garden and habitat garden.

Cancellation Policy

Program Refunds:

Refunds will be given (minus a 10% admin. fee) if cancellation notice is given at least 10 days in advance for Program Registrations.

There will be no refund if less than 10 days notice is given for Program Registrations.

The verified Main Contact is the only person who can withdraw a participant.

All refunds must be submitted via the Refund Request Form provided by Park and Recreation.

Customer should be aware that refunds take 10 days.
