Established in 1993, the Division of Nature Preserves and Natural Resources’ mission is to protect the region’s biodiversity and natural heritage for its inherent value and for the benefit of future generations by promoting open space preservation, conserving natural communities, and fostering awareness and stewardship through environmental education and outdoor recreation.
Reedy Creek Nature Preserve protects 737- acres of natural, forested habitat within Reedy Creek Park. There are over ten miles of hiking trails in the nature preserve for the outdoor enthusiast, giving visitors the opportunity to explore a variety of terrains, while enjoying scenic views of small lakes, forests, fields, streams, and wild life. Reedy Creek Nature Preserve is also home to Reedy Creek Nature Center and the Dr. James F. Matthews Center for Biodiversity Studies.
Reedy Creek Nature Center has developed Environmental Education Programs with Standard Course of Studies and Common Core in mind. All our programs help reinforce concepts that students learn in the classroom through hands-on live experiences by allowing students experience nature

Fins, feet, flippers, and tails! From gathering food to escaping predators, these useful caracteristics allow their owners to make the most of their environments. Students will investigate the ways that behavioral and physical adaptations enable animals to survive in an ecosystem.

The following prices are per class (max of 25 students): CMS at Reedy Creek Nature Center $30. Non CMS at Reedy Creek Nature Center $40.00. Additional travel fee of $15 for programs at your site.
R4 – Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. We will learn technical terms for botanical and zoological species, types and processes.
SL1 – Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Time is allowed for questions and discussions about specific topics in each program.
SL2 – Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively and orally. We will present and discuss information in various media formats, including hand-on exploration, outdoor oral presentation and digital media during our programs.
From the Science Standards:
1.L.1 – Learn how different animals meet their basic needs of air, water, and food for energy and growth. Learn what they eat and how they grow. See the natural habitats in the nature preserve by walking the trails.
4.L.1 – Discover how animals interact with their environment by adapting to changes and changing behaviors to survive. Learn about differences in individuals that gives them advantages for survival.
5.L.2 – See how animals function in their ecosystem. Classify them as to their biotic factor function – producers, consumers or decomposers. Look at the interconnected relationships, such as food webs and nutrient cycle.
Refunds will be given (minus a 10% admin. fee) if cancellation notice is given at least 10 days in advance for Program Registrations.
There will be no refund if less than 10 days notice is given for Program Registrations.
