Patricia Stegura, science educator and “science enthusiast”, has taught science enrichment programs from Pre-K through middle level grades. Her current program, CSI: “Adventures in Forensics”, has been captivating students’ sleuthing skills since 2011.This program has been featured on WISTV news in Columbia, SC as well as in the Charlotte Observer, The State newspaper, Irmo News, Chronicle-Independent, and The Newberry Observer.

CSI: “Adventures in Forensics” is a full day, interactive and comprehensive forensics program for 4th and 5th grade students. All activities are “hands on “and “minds on” and your students will love becoming crime scene investigators. Topics covered include: evidence collection techniques, fingerprinting (latent and patent prints), DNA extraction, blood testing and hair/fiber analysis. In the culminating activity, students process a mock crime scene, conduct laboratory analysis of all physical evidence and conclude who the perpetrator(s) is/are. Successful student groups earn their CSI badge!
Classroom, empty area (stage or empty classroom to set up crime scenes), use of smartboard or projector , class set of microscopes desired through CMS school district inter school loan program.

R8 – Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence: Use deductive reasoning skills when evaluating written and oral testimony and comparing it to physical evidence at the crime scene to draw conclusions about the crime.
W1- Write argument to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relative and sufficient evidence. Present findings in your case using both testimonial and physical evidence to persuade a jury of your peers.
SL4- Present information, findings and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line or reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Solve the crime scenes by presenting findings that establish motive and opportunity while linking physical evidence analyzed in the lab to a suspect.
4.P.2- Understand the composition and properties of matter before and after they undergo a change or interaction. Observe and identify the clues that a chemical reaction took place when testing blood samples, extracting DNA and performing Kastle- Meyer tests. 5.P.2- Understand the interactions of matter and energy and the changes that occur. Understand how physical evidence can be contaminated by environmental conditions and human collection errors. Execute 4 step crime scene protocol when using evidence collection techniques. 5.L.3- Understand why organisms differ from or are similar to their parents based on the characteristics of the organism, Examine fingerprints, DNA, hair and blood types and discuss the similarities/uniqueness between populations and individuals. Distinguish between individual and class evidence.
