Kathren Martin

Kathren “Kat” Martin is a theatre artist from Charlotte North Carolina. Kat is a director, teaching artist, dramaturg, experience creator, and invested community member. Since graduating with her Master’s Degree in, Theatre: History, Criticism, Dramaturgy, and Theory with an emphasis in Directing and Feminist Theatre Theory, from the University of South Carolina Kat has been working with students, artists and communities across the country in promotion of equitable artistic expression and excellence. After graduate school Kat worked at Virginia Stage Company as the Resident Dramaturg/Teaching Artist/Associate Director, where she created original work like The Line: Art for Social Change Series, With Your Name Upon My Lips, and the Voices from the Margins Play Reading series. Kat also worked as dramaturg and director on productions like The Tempest, Peter and the Starcatcher, Grounded, and the Midsummer Fantasy Festival. As a resident teaching artist, Kat created curriculum and lead in school Shakespearean residencies, Page to Stage Residencies with English classes across VA, workshops for homeschool students, the Girl Scouts of America and the US Army Band. As an educator Kat has worked with students at Old Dominion University, University of North Carolina Charlotte, Norfolk State University, Queens University of Charlotte, the youth of Hampton Roads through in-school residencies and community engagement workshops, and rural communities of North Carolina through a partnership with Triad Stage Company. As a community organizer and teaching artist Kat has worked in places like Cleveland Public Theatre as a Brick City Site leader facilitating the creation of original work by the youth residents of Cuyahoga Metro Housing Authority. While in Cleveland Kat continued to explore new work by directing 4 Veils: An Essay and creating the 4 Fruits of Hope as a part of the Station Hope Social Justice Festival. Kat is highly invested in creating equitable creative spaces for art, making that empowers and galvanizes communities.
