Kathren “Kat” Martin is a theatre artist from Charlotte North Carolina. Kat is a director, teaching artist, dramaturg, experience creator, and invested community member. Since graduating with her Master’s Degree in, Theatre: History, Criticism, Dramaturgy, and Theory with an emphasis in Directing and Feminist Theatre Theory, from the University of South Carolina Kat has been working with students, artists and communities across the country in promotion of equitable artistic expression and excellence. After graduate school Kat worked at Virginia Stage Company as the Resident Dramaturg/Teaching Artist/Associate Director, where she created original work like The Line: Art for Social Change Series, With Your Name Upon My Lips, and the Voices from the Margins Play Reading series. Kat also worked as dramaturg and director on productions like The Tempest, Peter and the Starcatcher, Grounded, and the Midsummer Fantasy Festival. As a resident teaching artist, Kat created curriculum and lead in school Shakespearean residencies, Page to Stage Residencies with English classes across VA, workshops for homeschool students, the Girl Scouts of America and the US Army Band. As an educator Kat has worked with students at Old Dominion University, University of North Carolina Charlotte, Norfolk State University, Queens University of Charlotte, the youth of Hampton Roads through in-school residencies and community engagement workshops, and rural communities of North Carolina through a partnership with Triad Stage Company. As a community organizer and teaching artist Kat has worked in places like Cleveland Public Theatre as a Brick City Site leader facilitating the creation of original work by the youth residents of Cuyahoga Metro Housing Authority. While in Cleveland Kat continued to explore new work by directing 4 Veils: An Essay and creating the 4 Fruits of Hope as a part of the Station Hope Social Justice Festival. Kat is highly invested in creating equitable creative spaces for art, making that empowers and galvanizes communities.

History Alive!

Program description

History Alive! guides students and classroom teachers through in-depth historical, political, and cultural analysis with the tools of a theatre artist. History and culture are lived experiences that require multi-disciplinary thinking to analyze. Teaching artists Kathren Martin will empower students to utilize, performance, creative writing, textual analysis, theatrical elements (such as; set, costume, etc.) and movement as means of analysis and articulation of analytical concepts. Both students and classroom teachers will be equipped with tools for historical, sociopolitical, and cultural analysis of time periods, historical movements, cultural artifacts, key historical figures, and the connection between periods. Kathren Martin has worked with students and teachers to understand better; ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, The Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, the Bolshevik revolution, the early 20th century, America in the 1940s and 1950s, the Victorian Period and Pax Britannica, Medieval Europe, and the American Civil War. But History Alive! is created for each class and can cover any historical period.

Students Will Be Able To:
• Analyze cultural artifacts like theatre to understand turning points in History better.
• Apply the four interconnected dimensions of historical thinking to understand the creation and development of societies/civilizations/nations over time.
• Demonstrate, through performance, creative writing, the impact of societal development on individuals.
• Demonstrate the connection between scientific and political movements with cultural, artistic movements.
• Use the principles of playwrighting to envision and embody the tension between freedom, equality, and power.
Use the tools of the theater artist to envision history as interconnected historical, political, economic, and cultural movements.
• Use theatrical tools to deconstruct conflict by using GOTE (goal, obstacle, tactic, expectation) a performance essential.

Length of program: Curricula will be customized after an initial meeting with classroom teachers. The History Alive! program can be shaped to fit class room curriculum and scheduling. Recommended 6 classes either consecutive or weekly, but one day intensives can also be scheduled. A preprogram meeting between class room teachers and teaching artists required at least 30 days before the program start date.

NC Standard Course of Study:

Reading R4 Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. Students will determine tone through textual analysis and articulate tone through performance choices.

Speaking and Listening SL3 Evaluate a speakers point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric. Students will place themselves into the speakers point of view through performance and creative writing. Students will analyze rhetoric to determine the goals and tactics of the speaker.

Language L5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language and nuances in word meanings. Students will demonstrate an understanding and of an ability to recognize figurative language by creating tableaus and connecting imagery to design elements.

NC Essential Standards:

9th Grade
WH.H.1 Apply the four interconnected dimensions of historical thinking to the Essential Standards for World History in order to understand the creation and development of societies/civilizations/nations over time. Students will be able to demonstrate, through performance a creative writing, the impact of societal development on individuals.
WH.H.5 Analyze exploration and expansion in terms of its motivations and impact. Students will be able to creative narrative that explore expansionism.
WH.H.6 Understand the Age of Revolutions and Rebellions. Students will be able to demonstrate the connection between scientific and political revolutions and rebellions with cultural artistic movements.

10th Grade
AH1.H.1 Apply the four interconnected dimensions of historical thinking to the American History Essential Standards in order to understand the creation and development of the United States over time. Students will be able to demonstrate through performance a creative writing the impact of the US’s development on individuals.
AH1.H.4 Analyze how conflict and compromise have shaped politics, economics and culture in the United States. Students will use theatrical tools to deconstruct conflict by using GOTE (goal, obstacle, tactic, expectation) an performance essential.
AH1.H. 8 Analyze the relationship between progress, crisis and the “American Dream” within the United States. Students will be able to step into the shoes of people and communities in pursuit of the American Dream.

11th Grade
AH2.H.2 Analyze key political, economic and social turning points in American History using historical thinking. Students will be able to analyze cultural artifacts like theatre to better understand turning points in American History.
AH2.H.5 Understand how tensions between freedom, equality and power have shaped the political, economic and social development of the United States. Students will be able to use the principles of playwrighting to envision and embody tension between freedom, equality and power.
AH2.H.6 Understand how and why the role of the United States in the world has changed over time. Students will be able to analyze the role of the US through the use of dramatic writing and tableau creation.

12th Grade
FP.C&G.1 Analyze the foundations and development of American government in terms of principles and values. Students will be able to use the elements of performance to demonstrate an understanding of the principles and values of American government.
FP.C&G.4 Understand how democracy depends upon the active participation of citizens. Students will use theatrical writing to envision possible futures with and with out active democratic involvement.
FP.C&G.3 Analyze the legal system within the United States in terms of the development, execution and protection of citizenship rights at all levels of government. Students will be able to step into the shoes of individual working with in and impacted by the US legal system.

Cancellation Policy

If the need arises to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injury, inclement weather, Kathren Martin will make every effort to give as much advance notice as possible. Kathren Martin will reschedule when possible, and in a timely way, and will appreciate the same effort from the school/group. If the school/group cancels and cannot reschedule with Kathren Martin, Kathren Martin will refund schools funds. In school/group cancels 7 days or longer in advanced, and the class cannot be rescheduled, Kathren Martin will refund the full amount. In school/group cancels 6 days or less in advance, and the class cannot be rescheduled, Kathren Martin will refund half of the amount (teaching hours will be refunded but not planning hours).
