WE ARE: CHILDREN OF THE HOLOCAUST

‘WE ARE: Children of the Holocaust’ is a program designed to educate, activate curiosity and involve fourth to eighth grade students in a theatre arts experience as they concurrently learn and write about children of the Holocaust. Activities involving voice, movement, concentration, ensemblizing, character creation and improvisation are used as well as historical research, reading, writing and problem solving. Students will write and perform poems and monologues using the biography of a child from the Holocaust for their classmates. Five day residencies will culminate with a presentation for the school provided school has a sound system for the presentation.

‘WE ARE: Children of…’ Series is a program designed to educate, enlighten, empower, activate curiosity and involve fourth to eighth grade students in a theatre arts experience as they concurrently learn and write about children in history. For example: Children of the Civil Rights Movement, Children of the Revolutionary War, Children of Famous Presidents, Children of the French Revolution, Children of the Roman Empire, etc. Activities involving voice, movement, concentration, ensemblizing, character creation and improvisation are used as well as historical research, reading, writing and problem solving. Students immerse themselves into the lives of children in history through exposure to relevant historical information, stories, visuals and then use their experiences to write short monologues, dialogues, poems or scenes to perform for their classmates. We will design a ‘WE ARE: Children of…’ curriculum specifically for a residency in your school. Five day residencies may culminate with a presentation for the school provided school has a sound system.

WE ARE: CHILDREN WHO WORKED IN THE MILLS (From Farm to Factory) is a program designed to educate, enlighten, empower, activate curiosity and involve students in a hands-on theatre arts experience while concurrently learning and writing about roles children played in the North Carolina cotton mill industry. Activities involving voice, movement, concentration, ensemblizing, character creation and improvisation are used as well as historical research, reading, writing and problem solving. Five day residencies culminate with a presentation for the school provided the school has a sound system.

Workshops and residencies are available for students and teachers, and can range from 1 hour to 5 days, depending on the needs of the school. STEAM Writing: From atoms to galaxies, scientists use metaphors to explain things that can’t be seen. Discover how writing poetry can deepen scientific understanding. Coming to America: Arrive in America in 1901 with only your dreams and a steamer trunk, and learn how how to live in a new country without losing your own culture. As we immigrate, we’ll integrate, bringing history to life through poetry and drama. Reading & Writing Art: Visual Literacy & Poetry: Can you read a painting? Your students will become detectives when they explore art—reading, analyzing and creating it—to discover its secrets, and translate those secrets into poetry. The Poetry of Ecosystems: Create poetry and visual art to understand ecosystems from the inside out and the outside in, discovering how animal, plants and climates work together. The Geography of Your Life: Your students will fall in love with social studies by designing three-dimensional maps of their own lives, the lives of historical figures, or characters from literature. Condensing the Water Cycle: If you were a body of water, what would you notice? How does the water cycle really work?
