Express Yourself Club

Students in rising grades 6 – 8 are invited to attend Express Yourself Club with a music therapist from Piedmont Music Therapy. Students will focus on creative outlet in dealing with anxiety and emotional issues. They’ll explore music and art, drama, songwriting, lyric analysis and musical improvisation through out the club program. This program is geared towards teenagers to help smooth the transition from elementary school to middle school. The program aims to help students in rising middle school grades to build self-esteem and self-confidence. They will explore concepts related to healthy coping skills, peer pressure and supportive resources. The club will weave creative and expressive arts through out the theme of resiliency and growing up as these middle school aged students explore their own journey and connect with fellow students.

Music Making Group: Exceptional Children

Residency ; Virtual/Online Program

Piedmont Music Therapy (PMT) is staffed by board certified music therapists who received a college degree in music therapy and following a clinical internship passed a national board certification exam. Their training included working with children and youth with varying abilities and providing a success oriented experience for them to be included in an academic setting. Goals such as socialization, self-expression, group cohesion, and fostering arts making are commonly attained through music therapy groups. PMT offers weekly music therapy group sessions for children to be able to make music along side peers, with the music therapist facilitating singing, playing instruments, writing songs, moving to music and more. Students do not have to have any previous musical experience to benefit from the experiences. Instruments and activities will be adapted for all students to participate and feel supported in a welcomed, therapeutic setting. Past clients of music therapy group programming offered by PMT yielded active participation, an outlet to their creative expression and allowed students to feel empowered within the academic setting. PMT is able to incorporate themes from the partnering organization or school and has woven past themes of holidays, the USA, traveling the world, self esteem and self confidence.

Musical Me: Staff Development

Professional Development

This staff development seminar is aimed to support school or organization staff in learning more about themselves through the arts. Tips on promoting health and wellness will be incorporated as the safety of children rests in the caring instruction of competent staff. Musical games will be used to practice communication styles and learn more about improving communications with fellow staff and students. No musical training is required for participation in the staff development program. The staff at Piedmont Music Therapy (PMT) are nationally board certified music therapists who are comfortable lecturing on topics such as: Musical Strategies for the Elementary, Middle or High School Classroom Exploring The Benefits of Music & Music Therapy Instruments and materials will be provided through this hands-on workshop. Following completion of this 2-4 hour workshop, staff will have a stronger working alliance with fellow co-workers present, gain a better understanding of their effects in the academic setting and feel more empowered to utilize healthy coping skills for taking care of themselves whether through the arts or other available leisure activities.

Ukulele Ensemble/Club

Out-of-School-Time ; Residency ; Workshop

PMT Ukulele Club is geared towards students grades 2 – 5, grades 6-8, Grades 9-10 or 11-12 who would like to learn how to play the ukulele in a fun environment with peers. Why the ukulele? Ukulele is one of the friendliest instruments for children and beginning musicians. It’s lightweight, easy to hold and carry, and the strings are easier to depress compared to guitar. The chords are also less complicated than guitar, which makes learning chords easier with only four strings. Ukuleles are a great primer for future string instrument exposure! While this will not be weekly music therapy group sessions, learning an instrument in a social setting under the guidance of a music therapist can be beneficial to participants. Children with different needs and abilities might not get the appropriate music skill instruction in a traditional lesson or large classroom setting. As music therapists, part of our job in supporting students who are interested in learning a new instrument is to create, adapt, and modify not only the materials being used but the musical elements to best fit the child’s needs and abilities. A variety of music styles will be incorporated such as folk, improvisation and pop. Instructor will use a variety of learning methods while fostering social skills development amongst classmates. Sheet music will be supplied by instructor. Club members will be encouraged to respect peers and the sounds that are created. Audio/visual consents for recorded music making will be available for intermittent updates emailed to guardians from the instructor. Students may bring their own every ukulele week or receive an instrument for $30 at the first club meeting. One scholarship will be available per club to cover the cost of a student’s instrument.
