EDUCATION STANDARDS
As a professional songwriter and storyteller, I present a program that both models and advocates multiple ELA Common Core Standards primarily in “Writing” and in “Speaking and Listening”:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.3d Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to capture the action and convey experiences and events.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.2 Interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study.
This program of music and stories rooted in the international folk and Appalachian traditions establishes multiple connections across the NC Essential Standards for Social Studies, Music and Theater:
Social Studies – 8.C.1: Understand how different cultures influenced North Carolina and the United States.
Music – 8.CR.1.1: Understand the role of music in North Carolina and the United States in relation to history and geography.
Theater – CU.1: Analyze theatre in terms of the social, historical, and cultural contexts in which it was created.
