Middle School Residency: Who's That With Abe Lincoln?

Program Description
There are lots of people who have made great contributions to history and yet, we seldom hear about them. This program features two of those little known patriots who helped to shape our American past.
Clarissa (Clara) Harlowe Barton: Civil War nurse and founder of the American Red Cross. She dedicated her life to serving the needs of others.

EDUCATION STANDARDS
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies. (For this presentation students will be introduced to vocabulary that might be somewhat unsual for them in our present time such as Confererate and Union Soldiers and stynographer.)
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.9 Analyze howtwo or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take. (For this presentation both stories happened during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, however the incidents happened independentaly of one another. Both had an dramatic impact on history.)
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.5 Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g. a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole. (For this presentation the stories happen during the same general time period. Similar time period phrasing will be used for each story.)
Social Studies 6H.2 Understand the political, economic and/or social signifiance of historical events, issues, individuals and cultural groups. (For this presentation students will be shown how the last words of Lincoln and the role of the Red Cross are significent today.)
Social Studies 8.C&G.2 Understand the role that citizen participation plays in societal change. (For this presentation students will be presented with the roles that Clara Barton and James Tanner played and challenges they both overcame.)
Arts Standards 7.C.1 Use movement, voice, and writing to communicate ideas and feelings. (For this presentation students will hear how voice tone and movement change during a performance in order to make the information more interesting. In addition, how crafting a proper story helps in retaining information for the listner.)

Cancellation Policy
There is a $200 cancellation fee. However if the program is rescheduled within 3 weeks those funds may be applied to the rescheduled program.
