Pablo Picasso Cubist Portraits
Students will learn about the legendary Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, and create Cubist style portraits. The residency will begin with a presentation on the life and work of Picasso, his approach to painting portraits, and his development and use of Cubism. This 3-day Residency is $400 for one class, and $250 for each additional class. The cost includes all teaching materials and travel.
W1 – Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. Students will complete a pre- and post- written assessment using Visual Thinking Strategies. In the VTS approach to learning, students are asked to answer three open-ended questions. The questions, “What’s going on in this picture?”, “What do you see that makes you say that?”, and, “What more can we find?” lead them to look carefully at works of art, talk about what they observe, back up their ideas with evidence, and discuss multiple possible interpretations of the work. W5 – Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. Students will complete a pre- and post- written assessment using Visual Thinking Strategies. The students will complete this written assessment initially, before being introduced to the content of the residency, and then once more after learning the content and completing the program. SL1 – Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Students will increase their speaking and listening skills by participating in class discussions about Pablo Picasso.
K-8.V.1 – Use the language of visual arts to communicate effectively. Through classroom discussions about the artwork of Pablo Picasso and the style of Synthetic Cubism, students will increase their art vocabulary and communication skills. K-8.V.2 – Apply creative and critical thinking skills to artistic expression. Students will design and create portraits inspired by Picasso’s artwork. K-8.V.3 – Create art using a variety of tools, media, and processes, safely and appropriately. Students will work with several types of media during this two day processes. Specifically, they will create sketches using pencils and paper, and produce portraits using oil pastels.
