Our third grade classes have been going to the James K. Polk Museum for the past 12 years that I have been teaching at Charlotte Christian School. We have been able to visit the museum each year, as well as enjoying the other activities that are available. We have been to the kitchen and enjoyed the cooking part of the museum. We have also enjoyed the school presentation, the toys and games, the film presentation describing the career of James K Polk, and the story describing the settlement of Mecklenburg County. Each activity that we have attended has been very well presented and the children have learned a lot and enjoyed the process. This is a field trip that we are always able to invite all of our parents to attend with their children, where they are not charged extra, (the museum is free, we only pay for the extra presentation) and there is plenty of room for all of us to spread out and learn. The docents have always been very informative, always costumed, and they lead us back into the early 1800’s when the Polk family lived in North Carolina. The docents are motivational and keep the children’s attention throughout their time at the museum. After we have enjoyed our visit to the museum, we have always had a picnic in the wooded area at the back of the museum. It is a very rustic environment, where parents and children can relax and enjoy their lunch. I would highly recommend a field trip to the James K. Polk Museum to any school, group, or family. It is well worth the trip.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Connie Koch Third Grade Teacher Charlotte Christian School
