EDUCATION STANDARDS

NC Standard Course of Study:

SL1: Students will work together to discuss and debate the topics of the opera, their meanings in their set time and in today’s time, and will evaluate effectiveness, morality, and consequences.

L4 and L6: Students will explore meaning of unkown genre-specific words and word origins as well as terms to define movements in artforms; students will also be given prompts to explore further depth and meaning of these terms.

W3, W6 and W9: In short, students will use a vast array of resources to continue research on presented ideas from the opera and will gather, organize, and create their own narratives -literary, visual, or musical-of the opera or other topics to share.

NC Essential Standards:

From the Arts Education, Music K-12 Standards: CR.1: Students will use opera as a vehicle to understand global, interdisciplinary, and 21st century connections with music (and the operatic art form).

MR.1: Students will understand the interacting elements to respond to opera and opera performances, including but not limited to, performance etiquette, using musical terminology to give responses, and interpreting meaning in the music and libretto.

From the Social Studies Standards: K-12.C.1: Students will use the operatic experience to explore all facets of culture, how it is expressed through opera and other art forms, and how these cultures are similar and different to our own.
