Tropical Rainforests "Paradise Out on a Limb"


Program Description

This live animal science program educates students on the importance of tropical rain forests.  Students will see LIVE rain forest animals including a constrictor snake, iguana and a Red-footed tortoise from South America with a selected animal for touching. Students will also touch a variety of rain forest artifacts including a confiscated Asian Leopard pelt and hippopotamus tusk.  Rain

We can accommodate full grade levels!  Basic and deluxe programs available.  Deluxe programs bring more animals, artifacts and activity sheets for copying.  If selecting a deluxe program, please add $75 to the price listed below.

NC Standard Course of Study:

SL2 Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. Our programs focus on a multi-sensory and multi-step approach to learning. All programs have a slide presentation, hands-on artifacts, interactive educational displays and live animal demonstrations. There are live hands-on animals in every program. SL5 Make strategic use of digital media and visual displays of data to express information and enhance understanding of presentations. Programs include colorful images to explain science concepts via slides, posters, charts and diagrams. Also on display are a large variety of hands-on common and uncommon artifacts (some rare and endangered) for students to compare texture, color, shape and form. SL6 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and communicative tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. During the presentation, students are provided with new vocabulary pertaining to the science topic. SL3 Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric. Periodically throughout the presentation, students are encouraged to ask questions.

NC Essential Standards:

3.L.2 Understand how plants survive in their environments. 3.L.2.1 Remember the function of the following structures as it relates to the survival of plants in their environments: roots- absorb nutrients; stems – provide support; leaves – synthesize food; – attract pollinators and produce seeds for reproduction. Plants have adapted a variety of strategies to live in a rainforest. The layers of the rainforest include the emergent layer, canopy layer, understory and ground floor. Strategies that plants utilize are discussed in each layer according to plant size, sunlight penetration and leaf shapes. Epiphytic plants such as bromeliads are also discussed with a live representative and demonstration of water retention / leaf shapes. 4.L.1 Understand the effects of environmnetal changes, adaptations and behaviors tht enable animals (including humans) to survive in changing habitats. 4.L.1.4 Explain how differences among animals of the same population sometimes give individuals an advantage in surviving and reproducing in changing habitats. Unlike their grounded cousins, most animals of the rainforest are dependent on an arboreal life finding safety and food in the trees. Physical adaptations help them survive in the trees. For example; tree frogs have suction cups on their toe pads to cling onto leaves and branches, sloths have curved nails to help grab and suspend from branches, snakes camouflage in the tree canopy, monkeys grasp with their hands and tails when jumping from tree to tree, lizards have fingers that act as clothes pins pinching twigs as they climb, etc. 5.L.2 Understand the interdependence of plants and animals with their ecosystem. 5.L.2.3 Infer the effects that may reslt from the interconnected relationship of plants and animals their ecosystem. 5.L.2.2. Identify animals and plants found in common ecosystems. Our program identifies plants and animals that are found living in a rainforest ecosystem and explains the strategies they use for survival. Animals and plants that live in each layer are discussed. Live animals are brought for the presentation.

Cancellation Policy

Notification is needed as soon as possible and we will reschedule the program as calendar permits. A cancellation fee is due if cancelled within a 2 week period from the program date. The cancellation fee is $75.
