Storytelling and Masks with Doug Berky
Doug Berky’s performances are a mix of of classic theatre forms: mime, mask, theatre, circus arts and storytelling. His large-mask performance GEMS: THE WORLD’S WISDOM STORIES uses storytelling styles from many cultures and includes masks, mime, inventive costumes and puppetry to introduce students to a collection of wisdom stories from around the world, teaching us to understand and trust one another. Each performance is tailored to the grade level, with performances that might include the following story productions: “The Lion and the Mouse” from Aesop’s Fables, “The Drip Nose Boy” a Native American traditional tale, “The Lame Man and the Blind Man” (Middle East).
Mask and physical theater artist Doug’s newest large mask theatre production FOIBLES, FABLES AND OTHER IMASKINATIONS presents teaching stories including The Tiger’s Whisker, a Korean folktale about healing; Simple Gifts, a French story about giving from the heart; The Crocodile and the Monkey, a Jataka Tale from India that encourages critical thinking. The performance is appropriate for families and upper elementary to middle school student groups.
NO SHOW is an all time school favorite. Doug combines mime, mask theater, circus arts and physical comedy into his hilarious performance of “No Show”, adaptable for elementary to early high school students.
